How To Use Being Laid-Off to Find You

In this week’s video, Laid-Off From a Job, Finding You, I talk about the importance of pausing and reconnecting with yourself after an unexpected layoff—a step I wish I had taken during my own experience.

In 2013, I quit my job, walked away from everything I owned, and financially bankrupted myself to pursue my calling and obey God. I moved to Charlotte with a plan and a temporary job, only to have that contract terminated just weeks later.

Desperation set in because my plan had been derailed and I had no backup. I had always been able to find work, but this time was different. I had changed personally—I didn’t just want a job anymore. I was frustrated that companies could discard me without concern for my well-being.

Instead of taking the time to grieve and recalibrate, bitterness set in and I delayed taking intentional steps toward rebuilding. From this experience, I learned the critical importance of honoring your emotions, assessing your finances and well-being, and using a layoff as a moment to find yourself before jumping back into work.

When you take the time to pause, reflect, and clarify what you truly want in your next role, a layoff can transform from a setback into a powerful opportunity for growth and alignment.

Here are a few practical tips to guide you on this journey:

  1. Create a new routine. Structure your days so you stay productive and mentally balanced. Include time for job searching and for self-care.

  2. Revisit old passions. Dust off that hobby, class, or passion project you used to love. It can lead to new opportunities and remind you who you are outside of work.

  3. Network with intention. Don’t reach out just to ask for leads—connect to learn, share ideas, and rebuild your confidence through meaningful conversations.

  4. Journal your growth. Write down what you’re learning about yourself each week. Patterns will emerge that point you toward your next aligned opportunity.

  5. Reframe your mindset. This didn’t happen to you—it happened for you. The layoff isn’t rejection; it’s redirection.

This transition can be a blessing in disguise. Once you’ve reconnected with who you truly are, the version of you that re-enters the workforce will be clearer, stronger, and more fulfilled than ever before. You’re not starting over—you’re starting aligned.
